Newquay Strategic Route is Now Open

After over a decade in the making, the highly anticipated Newquay Strategic Route (NSR) is now officially open, a major boost for Newquay and the wider Cornish community. This vital piece of infrastructure will ease congestion, connect key developments in the area, and support sustainable future growth across the region.

At Kemp, we’re proud to have been part of this journey since the early days. From the initial topographical surveys to the final phases of setting out.

What Is the Newquay Strategic Route (NSR)?

The Newquay Strategic Route forms a crucial part of the infrastructure supporting the Nansledan development – a Duchy of Cornwall-led extension to Newquay that has grown steadily into a vibrant, sustainable community. Designed to serve thousands of future homes, schools, businesses, and community spaces, the NSR connects the A3058 at Quintrell Downs with the A392 at Hendra, offering improved access and traffic flow for locals and visitors alike.

Our involvement began back in 2010, when Kemp was commissioned to complete the original topographical survey of the site for Cornwall Council and the Duchy of Cornwall.

Kemp’s Role in the Newquay Strategic Route

Here’s what our team has helped deliver over the past 14 years:

  • Topographical survey for Cornwall Council and the Duchy of Cornwall – The original survey provided the groundwork for all design and planning.
  • Setting out for ground investigations in 2013 – We marked out the key areas where the team could safely and efficiently assess what was going on beneath the surface.

  • Setting out Link roads in Newquay – Kemp set out the eastern link road for Mildren Construction and the western link road for Cormac. These became crucial links during the build and now form part of the completed NSR.
  • Setting out Residential plots in Newquay– On the growing Nansledan development, we’ve worked with WBM, Morcombe Construction, and MJL to set out residential plots. This work is still ongoing, and we’re looking forward to continuing our support as the community expands.
  • School setting out – We also set out the new primary school in Nansledan for Midas Construction, helping to create essential educational facilities right in the heart of the development.

Why the NSR Matters for Cornwall

The NSR supports growth for the local economy, as well as reducing travel times, and linking people to where they need to be. It’s also designed with sustainability in mind, including walking and cycle routes to encourage greener travel.

The route plays a huge role in making Nansledan a well-connected, liveable place – and it supports wider goals for housing, education, and employment across the region.

At Kemp our team have enjoyed working on this project over the last 14 years. We’ve worked with fantastic clients and contractors including Cornwall Council, the Duchy of Cornwall, Cormac, and multiple local developers – and we’re proud of what we’ve achieved.
