Congratulations to Rich on Becoming a Chartered Surveyor!
We’re so pleased to share that we have another Chartered Surveyor in our team.A big congratulations to Rich, who has

Ian has been part of the Kemp team for nearly 20 years, joining us in March 2007 after studying Construction Management at the University of Plymouth. Having enjoyed building from a young age, a career in construction felt like a natural fit. He started out as a chainman and has since progressed to become our Survey Manager for Setting Out.
It’s the variety that Ian enjoys most about surveying. His days can look very different depending on the job, from travelling to site to carry out setting out work and working through calculations between jobs, to producing models for machine control from the office or home. It’s a role that combines practical site work with the technical side of surveying, keeping things interesting day to day.
One project that stands out in Ian’s memory is the Morrisons extension in Exeter. The new works needed to tie in with the existing shop floor, so the team had to carry out regular surveys of the existing steelwork and walls, alongside as-built surveys throughout the project. Keeping track of the existing structures and making sure everything lined up correctly was an important part of getting the job done.
After so many years at Kemp, Ian says it’s both the variety of the work and the people that make it a great place to be. No two jobs are quite the same, and working alongside a good team makes all the difference.
Away from work, Ian enjoys walking, heading to the beach and camping. If he hadn’t gone into surveying, he reckons he might have ended up owning his own restaurant instead!
Looking ahead, Ian has a road trip in mind, with plans to drive to Sweden in the next couple of years to see the Øresund Bridge and tunnel, which connects Denmark and Sweden. It sounds like an interesting stop for someone who has spent nearly two decades working in engineering and construction!
