Meet The Team: Lauren C- Data Processor

After starting out in Architecture and completing a Master’s degree, Lauren discovered she had a stronger affinity for the factual side of the profession rather than the conceptual. That realisation sparked a new direction, one that combined technical skill, creativity, and a love for computers. “I enjoy creating drawings from data and have always been fascinated by how information is represented with lines and symbols,” she explains. That blend of interests makes Lauren a perfect fit for her role at Kemp.

Having joined nearly two years ago, Lauren was originally drawn to Kemp while searching for a role that would make full use of her varied skills. With a solid foundation in CAD, a head for numbers, and strong software know-how, she stepped into a vital office-based role that supports those working on site. “At the time I filled a gap in the team, and hopefully I’m making life easier for everyone on the ground!”

Day to day, Lauren is based in the office, working mainly on processing drainage data. Her mornings usually begin with downloading data collected by the surveyors on site, getting everything ready for analysis. A large part of her time is dedicated to working on Wincan, processing shapefiles and reviewing CCTV reports, turning complex site data into clear, visual representations.

You might also spot a special team member keeping her company- Luna one of our office dogs, who makes sure her human takes regular breaks for a leg stretch!

One of Lauren’s most memorable projects to date has been the A30 Chiverton to Carland Cross scheme. It’s a job she’s worked on since joining Kemp, and even though the upgraded road is now open and making journeys quicker across Cornwall, there’s still a huge amount of work happening behind the scenes. “I’ve been reviewing CCTV footage of newly installed drainage pipes, checking for defects, and arranging repairs where needed, all in line with HADDMS specification, which has now been replaced by GDMS,” she explains.

The deliverables on a project like this are complex, combining visual reports, images and shapefiles that form a complete database of assets such as catchpits and pipework. Lauren has played a key role in streamlining the process, creating a bespoke form for surveyors to complete on site that reduces processing time and helps minimise road closures. “For every hour on site, we do about three hours in the office,” she adds. “So the more we can handle post-survey, the better for everyone.”

When asked what she enjoys most about working at Kemp, Lauren doesn’t hesitate: “Training and development is really encouraged. I love seeing people succeed and cheering them on. There’s always something to learn, and I feel supported in improving myself and my work.”

Outside of the office, Lauren enjoys anything creative. From crocheting tiny animals to jewellery making and card crafting, she enjoys anything hands-on. “And if I wasn’t doing this job,” she admits, “I’d probably be sorting mail, I love organising and getting through a big pile of tasks every day!”

If she could head anywhere in the world, it would be north… very north. “I’d love to see the Northern Lights, maybe stay in an ice hotel or do a cruise around Norway!”
