Kemp has recently completed six weeks of surveying works in Cullompton, supporting the construction of two new flood ponds as part of the wider Cullompton Relief Road project.
Working on behalf of Associated Asphalt, we provided setting out, as-built surveying, machine control modelling, volume calculations and UAV imagery throughout the works.
The two ponds form part of the flood management measures for the relief road, providing additional space for water during periods when the nearby river floods. More than 10,000m³ of material was excavated across the two ponds during construction.
Piran, one of our setting out engineers, was based on site each day throughout the six-week programme, providing ongoing surveying support as the works progressed. This included setting out the two ponds, fencing and associated access road, as well as capturing as-built information.
To assist with the earthworks, we also produced a machine control model, providing the site team with the design information required during excavation. Volume calculations were carried out alongside the works to quantify the material excavated.
A combination of GPS and Total Station surveying was used across the project, alongside UAV technology to capture aerial imagery of the site. With the works located close to the M5, additional care was needed when carrying out UAV flights to ensure they were completed safely and in line with the relevant UAV requirements.

Our UAV was also used to capture aerial photography of the project for Associated Asphalt to use within their own marketing. We always aim to support our clients wherever we can, whether that’s delivering accurate survey data on site or providing additional outputs like imagery to help with their own marketing and project communication.
Our work on the flood ponds is now complete after around six weeks on site, with more than 10,000m³ of material excavated across the two ponds during the works.

Before the first foundation is poured or a single structure is built, it’s essential to understand exactly what’s on site.
