Service Spotlight: Deformation Monitoring

At Kemp, our monitoring services are designed to protect your structures and your safety, support informed decisions, and ultimately provide peace of mind. Whether you’re a consulting engineer, contractor, or asset manager, our deformation monitoring and control surveying solutions offer the precision and reliability you need to manage risk and ensure safety.

What is Deformation Monitoring?

Deformation monitoring involves the precise measurement of structural or ground movement over time. By tracking subtle shifts, subsidence, or cracks, we help clients detect early signs of structural instability and mitigate potential hazards before they become costly or dangerous. This type of surveying is essential when:

· Cracks appear in walls or floors

· Subsidence is suspected

· Movement is suspected in natural features like cliff faces or embankments

· Construction is planned near vulnerable structures

One long-term monitoring project saw us regularly attending a site in Portland, where concerns had arisen about a retaining wall and the slope behind it, surrounding Osprey school. The school had been closed for some time, and the stability of the area needed to be confirmed before any future planning could proceed. Over the course of a year, we installed targets along the wall for precision measurement and recorded spot levels of the slope during each visit. The results revealed seasonal trends, showing the wall moved back and forth by a few millimetres depending on humidity and environmental conditions. This kind of insight allowed our client to make informed decisions with confidence and clarity.

Our surveys provide comprehensive data that supports design decisions, health and safety compliance, and insurance assurance. The data we collect empowers consulting engineers to move forward confidently with detailed solutions and gives contractors and site managers the information they need to work safely.

When Do You Need Monitoring?

Monitoring isn’t just used for reactivity it’s a vital tool for prevention as well. Here are some of the most common scenarios where we’re called in:

· Pre-construction assessments: Monitoring is often required before nearby building or infrastructure work begins.

· Ongoing structural surveillance: Essential for ageing infrastructure or areas prone to movement (e.g. cliffs, tunnels, bridges).

· Post-incident analysis: To determine the extent of movement following subsidence or a structural event.

· Long-term asset management: For facility managers or insurers to keep a continual eye on structural health.

From simple crack monitoring that can be self-maintained to remote systems with real-time alerts, we can tailor our solutions to match the needs of each project individually.

Our Monitoring Process

Each monitoring project is very different so it’s important we all have a clear understanding of the challenge before we begin.

Our typical process includes:

1. Initial consultation and site visit – We assess required accuracy, duration, and project-specific conditions.

2. Design of the monitoring regime – We create a bespoke solution to deliver reliable results.

3. Installation of control and reference points – Ensuring consistent, accurate measurements.

4. Regular observations and comparison reporting – At agreed intervals, or in real-time if remote monitoring is in place.

Why Choose Kemp for Monitoring?

· Comprehensive Expertise – Our experienced team uses the latest technology for unmatched accuracy and reliability.

· Tailored Solutions – No two sites are the same. We adapt our methodology to suit your environment and goals.

· 24/7 Remote Monitoring – Need continuous data? Our systems can run around the clock with triggered email and text alerts.

· Proven Track Record – We’re trusted by clients across the UK for projects ranging from bridges and cliff faces to education sites and urban developments.
