Surveying Cullompton’s Flood Ponds

Zak joined Kemp Chartered Land and Engineering Surveyors almost two years ago after completing a Design, Planning and Surveying T Level at Truro College, where he first developed an interest in surveying and the construction industry.
His route into the company came through his college tutor, who knew Scott, our MD, and made him aware of an opportunity at Kemp. After being put in touch and applying for the role, Zak joined the team and began building his career within the surveying profession.
Now working as a Survey Technician, Zak supports a wide range of projects across the South West, helping to deliver accurate survey data for clients across various sectors.
A typical day for Zak starts with reviewing the project information, survey area and RAMS before heading out to site. Once there, he assesses the site, plans the most effective approach and establishes control or GPS stations where required before beginning the survey. After collecting the necessary data, he returns home or to the office to maintain equipment, upload data and prepare for the next day’s work.
One of the things Zak enjoys most about working at Kemp is the level of independence and trust given to surveyors, along with the support available from the wider team. The opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues while developing his own skills has been a key part of his progression since joining the company.
One project that stands out in Zak’s career so far is Claremont Street in Plymouth. The project involved long journeys and challenging weather conditions throughout, but seeing the completed work and reflecting on the lessons learned made it a particularly rewarding experience.
If he hadn’t pursued a career in surveying, Zak believes he would still be working in a hands-on role outdoors, as he enjoys practical work and being out on site rather than behind a desk.
Outside of work, Zak enjoys playing football, going to the gym, spending time with friends and family, and making the most of good weather at the beach.
If he could travel anywhere in the world, Zak would choose either Norway or New Zealand, with both destinations appealing for their stunning scenery, wildlife and opportunities for an unforgettable road trip.
After almost two years at Kemp, Zak has become a valued member of the surveying team, bringing enthusiasm, a strong work ethic and a willingness to continually develop his skills across a diverse range of projects.
