Meet the Team: Sam P, Survey Technician

Sam joined Kemp Chartered Land and Engineering Surveyors nearly three years ago after finishing his A Levels and looking for a career that combined working outdoors with his interest in construction.

Now working as a Survey Technician, Sam plays an important role across a range of projects, helping to deliver accurate survey data and setting out work on sites throughout the South West.

His introduction to surveying came through a week of work experience at Kemp with Ben Rice, where he was given an insight into topographical surveying and the post-processing work involved behind the scenes. Spending time both out on site and seeing the technical side back in the office gave Sam a real understanding of the industry and sparked an interest that ultimately led him to join the team full-time.

Sam started out within the topographical surveying team, spending around a year developing his skills and gaining experience across different types of surveys before moving into setting out. Since then, he’s continued to build his knowledge on site, working across a variety of projects and developing a strong understanding of the practical side of engineering surveying.

A typical day for Sam usually involves visiting two or three different sites before heading home or back to the office to process surveys, complete post-visit data work, and prepare everything needed for the following day. The balance between site work and office-based processing means no two days are ever quite the same.

One of the things Sam enjoys most about the role is the variety that comes with surveying, whether that’s working on different sites, tackling new challenges, or using different equipment and software throughout the day.

If he hadn’t gone into surveying and engineering, Sam says he would likely still have found himself somewhere within the construction industry, most likely working in groundworks.

Outside of work, Sam enjoys playing football and making the most of the summer by going camping whenever he can, enjoying time outdoors away from site.

After nearly three years at Kemp, Sam has become a valued part of the team, bringing a practical, hands-on approach to every project he works on while continuing to grow his experience within the industry.
