Meet The Team: Piran M, Trainee Surveyor

Meet Piran, one of our Trainee Surveyors, who joined Kemp fresh out of school. Piran developed an interest in engineering during his first year of Sixth Form, but like many students, he wasn’t quite sure which route he wanted to take. His tutor suggested surveying, having previously taught Mark Hockaday, one of our Land Surveyors and Mentors. From there, Piran was able to shadow Mark while studying, learning all about topographical survey and what it involves.

He joined Kemp last summer, just a week after finishing his A-Levels, and has been learning the ropes ever since. Piran knew surveying would suit him so applied for a trainee position following on from his work experience at kemp alongside applying to university. Having always liked the idea of working outdoors in Cornwall, accepting the job offer was a no-brainer.

Piran’s favourite thing about working at Kemp is the variety. No two days are the same, especially for our trainees who rotate around all departments to get a taste of every aspect of surveying before choosing their favourite.

A typical day for Piran varies significantly as part of his training. Currently, he’s spending a lot of time on the Truro Northern Access Road (TNAR) site, setting out new infrastructure for the project. However, he has also spent time assisting surveyors on topographical and utility surveys on a variety of sites.

If he wasn’t working at Kemp, Piran thinks he’d probably be studying structural or civil engineering, with the aim of one day working on large-scale projects, something he’s already had the opportunity to be part of during his time with us.

When he’s not working, Piran enjoys visiting new places with his partner Paige, spending time with family, or getting stuck into a good book. He’s also working on improving his cooking skills, one recipe at a time.

If he could travel anywhere, Piran would love to do a coast-to-coast road trip across the USA, visiting iconic cities and exploring the vast national parks along the way.
