Meet the Team: Josh Lockyear, Survey Director

Josh has been with Kemp for 13½ years, and during this time has worked his way up from solving surveying challenges on site to overseeing projects, and supporting our teams.

Josh first joined Kemp after a recommendation from our longstanding land surveyor and now head of small works, Rich Wherry. He was drawn to the mix of working outdoors, problem-solving and the fact that every day brings something different.

His favourite thing about working at Kemp is the people. While he loved the problem-solving involved in his time out on site, particularly finding previously unlocatable services and demonstrating expertise to clients, it’s now the people he works with who make his life much easier!

As Survey Director, Josh’s days involve quoting projects, scheduling teams and running QA on drawings before they’re issued. Scheduling keeps his problem-solving brain ticking, while QA allows him to support the team and ensure our standards remain consistent across projects.

One of his most memorable projects involved proving the location of a cut cable at Newquay Airport. A real needle-in-a-haystack job, the location was confirmed through vacuum excavation while Josh was still on site, with the project management and groundworks teams watching on. A pretty satisfying result!

Outside of work, Josh enjoys rock climbing with his two girls, which has become a great way to keep them active while learning new skills himself. He and his partner, Elaine, enjoy all things Cornish, from sea swims and cliff walks to pasties, as well as the occasional visit to the playhouse to watch the local Am-Dram group.

When it comes to travel, Hong Kong is hopefully next on the family wish list, where they plan to visit friends and experience a completely different culture.

And if surveying wasn’t an option, Josh would’ve liked to be a famous actor. Although, apparently, Hollywood is no match for Cornwall!
