Working in a live highway environment requires staff to be experienced and well trained. The constant danger and traffic noise from vehicles speeding through the work place requires the utmost concentration both to carry out the surveying task and to remain vigilant to all that is going on around you.

Kemp have been working in this type of environment for over 20 years and have been employed on the UK’s busiest motorways and trunk roads to carry out surveys and setting out works for consultants, contractors and local authorities.

Our staff have a wealth of experience in working in the challenging environment of live road works

All sites are visited prior to works being undertaken, traffic management systems agreed with the client in advance and method statements and risk assessments are prepared. Prior to surveyors being deployed on site they are briefed fully upon the task to be carried out.

Surveys are carried out using non-contact methods wherever possible to ensure that the disruption to traffic is minimised and the safety of the survey team is not compromised. Night working can be undertaken with traffic management to ensure that there is no disruption to heavy daytime traffic flows.

Road surveys for maintenance dictate that level control must be established to the highest order as mm mean money in the world of surfacing. All survey control points are double run with a digital level reading a barcode staff to ensure that there are no anomalies. Our experience in setting out for road surfacing means that we are more than aware of the problems that poor level control, established by GPS or EDM, can cause during the construction phase.

Survey outputs are always 3d for highway schemes with MX being the output of choice for any highway engineer. 2d CAD compliments the MX data for presentation and plotting. The survey grid is always Ordnance Survey National Grid and Datum established from the OS active GPS network. Highway contractors and designers like 100m on the ground to be 100m on the plan and so the scale factor is always set to 1 so that the ambiguities of scale of the National Grid are removed.

Our team of experienced surveyors are able to get the job done quickly with out sacrificing quality.

Furthermore, Kemp Chartered Land & Engineering Surveyors have extensive experience in building roads and other major infrastructure, our Engineering department can boast some of the largest projects ever constructed in the south West.

Kemp Chartered Land & Engineering Surveyors have in recent years also carried out numerous Topographic and Utility surveys for the Highways Agency via their management agent Enterprise Mouchel.
